| June 30, 2008 Parents and guardians begin two year partnership with Link At an orientation program held on Monday, June 30, parents and guardians of newly enrolled students learned about what the Summer Session has in store for their children over the next month and how they can support their children to ensure a successful experience. Some of the topics covered included student activities, proper uniforms and discipline. Parents were offered opportunities to get involved at Link beyond the summer and into the regular school year, activities such as mentoring, tutoring, chaperoning trips, coaching and/or assisting with athletic teams and even taking a ballroom dance class! | |

June 6, 2008 Congratulations to the Class of 2008! Link's Class of 2008 graduated in an impressive and inspiring ceremony on Friday, June 6 at the Emmanuel Baptist Church. Graduating 8th grader Emagenee Hawkins welcomed families and guests to the event and Justen Haynes provided the student farewell speech. Mr. Chris Garavente, outgoing chair of the Link Board of Trustees delivered the keynote congratulatory speech, exhorting them to find their "greatness." Read more and view slideshow. May 24, 2008 Link's Entourage Launches Successfully On Saturday, May 24, a group of boys from Link successfully launched a boat that they built, the Entourage, on the Passaic River in Newark. Guided by staff from Project U.S.E., the boys planned, built and launched the boat, along the way learning about the maritime history of the area as well as the science and art of boatbuilding -- not to mention how to use power tools. May 19, 2008 Councilwoman Dana Rone announces "Central Ward's Big Give" to Linkers Newark Central Ward's Councilwoman Dana Rone visited Link today to announce her "Big Give" program where students can earn "Dana Dollars" for volunteer hours spent in "making the Central Ward a better place." Councilwoman Rone, inspired by Oprah Winfrey's "Big Give," decided to launch the program in the Central Ward, "challenging residents to perform acts of kindness, giving and good deeds" with a celebratory event scheduled for Saturday, June 28th, Branch Brook Park, from 11am to 4 pm, where Dana Dollars can be exchanged for prizes. May 17, 2008 The Elite Four represent Link in Toy Challenge Four 8th graders presented their entry, Cartoon Troubadors, before judges at the Sally Ride Science Toy Challenge on Saturday, May 17, 2008 at the U.S. Patent Office in Alexandria, VA. Sadiera Crawford, Joyceline Appiah, Amber Rogers and Shaheerah Allen received recognition for their entry as well as a medal for leadership in "halftime" activities at the event. Read more . . . |

May 17, 2008 Link students among winners at UMDNJ Science Fair Linkers received recognition and honor at the SMART Program 2008 Science Fair Awards Ceremony on Saturday, May 17, 2008. Seventh graders Dianna Fulton and Crystal Ngoje won first and second place respectively in the 7th/8th grade category. | May 8, 2008 Behind the scenes at Fox News Eight Link students visited the Fox News studio in Manhattan to view the broadcast of The Live Desk with Martha MacCallum, an afternoon news program on May 7, 2008. At the conclusion of the show, Ms. MacCallum met with students to share her experiences in TV and answer students' questions about broadcasting. The visit included a tour of the studios with producer Molly Cullen. | |

April 28, 2008 Students return from trip to London Imani Jackson, Alexis Flowers, Jasmine Holden-Charles and Tamer Zamba, along with chaperone and art teacher Keva Berutti, returned from a four-day jaunt to London, England. Friends of Link, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Landsberger generously invited the girls to visit them at their home in London and then escorted the girls to many sites including Buckingham Palace, Tower of London, The Churchill Museum and War Rooms, the London Eye, Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum, Windsor Castle and more. American Airlines kindly provided the airline tickets for the group. The girls will soon share their experiences with the entire student body in a special presentation. |
| April 26, 2008 Budding scientists display projects Eighteen Link 7th graders participated in a Science Fair sponsored by the SMART Program at the NJ Medical School, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Coached by science teacher Rosana Chanco, students started their projects early in the school year and prepared them for presentation to the judges on the 26th. The winners of the fair will be announced at a special ceremony on Saturday, May 17th at the medical school at 9 a.m. | |

April 15, 2008 Playing with the pros Link students learned skills, performed drills and heard inspirational talks from professional athletes at the Giants' Football/Tennis Clinic hosted by Athletes in Action, Inc. on April 15, 2008. Several NJ Giants football players guided the boys through a series of eight practice drills including passing, tackling, and tackle avoidance. The girls, working with Mr. Doug Golding, tennis professional, and his staff, worked on serving and returns of the ball. View a photo slideshow of the event. |
| April 9, 2008 Link "lawyers" exhibit their knowledge in a mock trial Link students put their lessons to practice by performing in a mock trial at Community Law Day at Seton Hall Law School in Newark, sponsored by NJ Law Education Empowerment Project (NJLEEP) and the NJ Hispanic Bar Association and held at Seton Hall University. Several Newark middle and high schools took place in the special day along with our Link students. Leading up to Law Day, a number of Linkers took part in elective classes conducted by a law student from NJ, learning about basic constitutional law and criminal law, and Community Law Day was the culminating event for the courses. After opening ceremonies and keynote speech by The Honorable Esther Salas, Federal Magistrate, District of New Jersey, students participated in a Mock Trial Exercise in front of various Superior Court judges, who provided students with feedback after the exercise. |

March 11, 2008 Link Cagers clinch second place in league The Link boys' basketball team placed second in the New Jersey Charter School Athletic League (CSAL) in a hard fought championship game against TEAM Academy on March 11, 2008. Many Linkers -- students, staff and parents-attended the game to cheer on the boys. Congratulations to the team and to Coach Jones for a terrific season! View a photo slideshow of the game. |

February 4, 2008 Link African Dancers entertain at Seton Hall School of Law Dancing to the rapid beat of the drum, the Link Community School African Dance group performed for students and guests at the Seton Hall Law School's Diversity Day on Monday, February 4, 2008. This talented dance group, which meets once a week after school, is taught by Brother Jerome Hunter, who also serves as their drummer. The event at Seton Hall was a great opportunity for our students to showcase their talent! |

February 1, 2008 Dean of Students kicks off Black History Month at Link Back from a week-long trip to South Africa, Mr. Jeffrey Pate shared his photos and reflections of the trip with Linkers in a morning assembly. Mr. Pate told of his visit to Soweto, Johannesburg and Capetown, mentioning seeing the homes of Nelson Mandela and Bishop Desmond Tutu as well as the Oprah Winfrey Leadership School for Girls. |

January 31, 2008 Link girls learn communication skills at Prudential Ten Link girls, known as the Thursday Girls' Lunch Group (TGLG), attended a workshop on oral communication at Prudential Financial at their Broad Street building. The girls observed and judged a speech modeling excellent public speaking and participated in mock interviews to help them gain practice, poise and confidence in oral communications. The TGLG is mentored weekly by volunteers Ms. Gloria McDonald and Ms. Vernay Simmons, both from Prudential. |

January 30, 2008 Link students cheer NJNets to victory! Link students released pent-up energy after completing their midterm exams at an exciting NJNets game on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at the IZOD Center in the Meadowlands. Over 140 Link students, faculty, parents and alumni enjoyed the Nets' victory over the Milwaukee Bucks. Our sincerest thanks to the NJNets organization for donating the tickets and to Mr. Tarik Rodgers, Link partner and friend, for facilitating the gift. |

January 21, 2008 Linker recognized in essay contest Justen Haynes, a current Link 8th grader, was awarded an honorable mention in an essay contest for the Martin Luther King Day Celebration sponsored by Princeton University. This annual celebration, drawing in campus and local community members, honors the legacy of Dr. King and focused this year on his imagined response to immigration issues in light of his vision of equal opportunity for all. January 8, 2008 International visitor impressed by Link's Smart Board technology Ms. Jan Galloway, a Chemistry and Science teacher on the IT Committee for Burnside High School, Christchurch, New Zealand, visited Link for an afternoon to learn about the use of SMART Board technology in the classroom. Knowing she would be vacationing in the NY/NJ area, she went to SMART Board's website to find a school in the area with the technology. Link is a designated Showcase School for SMART Board for our success in integrating technology and curriculum. |

November 2, 2007 Link savors success at the 10th anniversary of A Taste of Newark Link's gala benefit A Taste of Newark, held on November 1, 2007 was a resounding success! Supporters, trustees, friends, alumni, students and their parents, and staff turned out in record numbers at NJPAC to support the school, to honor the founder of Link, Sister Vivien Jennings, O.P., and the Sisters who served Link through the years and to enjoy the phenomenal event. |

September 19, 2007 Suzanne Freeman of Scholastic, Inc. visits Link and captures Student assembly on Scholastic News Online Suzanne Freeman visited Link on September 19, 2007 and observed our daily morning assembly, the way the Link community begins every day. On this day, a few students, working with Ms. Keisha Cleveland, Link's Vice Principal, made a presentation to the entire student body about the incidents in Jena, Louisiana and invited other students to share their thoughts on the students. May 25, 2007 Linkers Meet Justice Alito at Seton Hall Law School At the invitation of NJ LEEP, Linkers David Amoakoh, Stanley Baxter, Sabrina Collins, Bryshawna Otto and Shatanya Schenck attended the Seton Hall University School of Law graduation on Friday, May 25, 2007 at NJPAC. During the event, they met with U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito, Jr., who was the guest speaker for the commencement ceremony. These students will be participating in the NJ LEEP Summer Law Institute, a five week course in criminal law which will be held at Seton Hall Law School, Newark this summer.
