LINK COMMUNITY SCHOOL OFFERS SUCCESS TO MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS Link Community School, an independent middle school serving the children of Newark and the surrounding urban communities, will host an Open House for incoming 7th grade students and a limited number of 8th grade students who seek a better life through an outstanding education. The event will be held on Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at 6:00 PM at Link Community School located on Irvine Turner Boulevard, between 17th and 18th Streets. Principal Marnie McKoy, La Toro Yates, Director of Admission, and a panel of students and alumni will explain Link's program and the possibilities it offers, such as acceptance to a top high school and assistance in securing financial aid to afford such a school. Link Ambassadors, who are current 7th graders, will lead a tour of the building. For 39 years, Link has provided a rigorous college preparatory curriculum, delivered within a framework of character-strengthening Core Values, such as respect, responsibility, and doing one's best, leading to personal growth, accountability and success for every student. This formula results in 100% acceptance to quality private high schools or highly selective magnet schools for our graduates, who earn over $1 million per year in scholarships and financial aid for their high school education. Link believes in the potential of every child and accepts those performing at, above and below grade level. Additionally, no child is ever denied admission because of inability to pay -- while families are asked to pay tuition on a sliding scale, every Link family receives significant financial assistance. Class size is limited to 16 students and we maintain a vigorous advisory program, with a ratio of 8 students per advisor. We meet the needs of each student through varying instruction styles, tutoring, and appropriate remediation. Our curriculum includes core courses in English, math, history and science supplemented with technology, fine art, music, drama, physical education and health. This solid academic foundation is extended through the use of elective courses and extensive partnerships which enable Link to present students with opportunities usually not available to inner city children. Our students take part in outdoor programs designed to promote self-reliance and leadership. We present residency programs in playwriting and public speaking, in addition to providing community service, and opportunities for mentorship programs and summer activities at camps and other programs. Students may participate in fencing, golf, soccer and lacrosse programs. At Link, our educational and ancillary programs are constantly evaluated and innovations, such as our month-long orientation to our rigorous academic standards and Core Values, are continually implemented. Link Community School was founded in 1969 by the Sisters of St. Dominic of Caldwell, NJ, offering education as a pathway out of poverty for urban youth. Link seeks to provide an outstanding independent middle school education for Newark adolescents of all academic abilities from economically disadvantaged families. Link endeavors to create a powerful learning community built on a collective commitment to excellence and enduring core values. By building a strong academic foundation and instilling life long values, Link aims to develop students who will be successful in higher education and responsible and resourceful citizens who give back to others.
