| June 2010 Dear 8th Graders, The summer is a time to take advantage of the library. I want you to familiarize yourself with the different resources a library offers. I want you to talk to the librarian; she/he is a wealth of knowledge and is there to help you. Tell her/him the kind of novels you like to read and ask for suggestions. Read some of the fun magazines you will find there. Take out a favorite DVD. And remember to get your library card. If you don’t live in Newark, you can get a county library card that will allow you to borrow books from the Newark Library. You will need to have a card, so when we take our field trips to the Newark Library you can avail yourself of their collection. It is important that you start feeling empowered in the classroom and my aim is to help you become more independent learners, depending less on me and more on yourselves. In 8th grade English, you will not just learn material: you will gain an understanding of the learning process, how to approach a problem and work through it. Start your reading with one of the recommended books; pick one from a genre that you like. And then try branching off on your own. You can always come back to this list. Just be sure to read three books. ---Mrs. Toes Tangel 8th Grade English Teacher |
