Alumni-Student Basketball Game January 26th
Alumni from across generations gathered together on a chilly Tuesday evening to celebrate their school spirit and share in a game of basketball. It was Link Alumni v. Students. From the get go, the alumni pushed the students hard. “I came to show the young ‘uns how it’s done,” explained St. Patrick’s High School Freshman Zaire Major ’09.
Sixteen alums faced the current Link Basketball Team (plus several additional students) in a 5 on 5 game to 15 points. Mike Wilson ’94, the current Link Boys’ Basketball coach, refereed the game. There was one defector from the alumni team, Gilbert White ‘96. He opted to play on the student side, evening out the height difference. “I came because I love to play basketball with the students,” said Miranda Tynes ’09. The alumni nominated Talmadge Glenn ’09 as the captain; the students nominated 8th grader Ramon Wright. After choosing their starting five players, the game was on.
While alumni and students alike rushed up and down the court, others found it more comfortable and interesting to watch. “I came to spend time with my little brother, and watch him play,” said Kelli McLean ’05 who spent the evening chatting on the sideline. Many current Link students and parents came to watch the game as well. “I came to see if my son has anything,” joked Farah Rodwell, mother of current 8th grader Tyshon Banks.
After three quarters, the alumni and students were neck and neck, tied at 14. “I came to see my classmates from 2009 and I came because I love the game of basketball,” stated Eastside Freshman William Joyce ’09. William and the other alumni raced across the court, putting up shot after shot, but they failed to get the ball in the hoop. The students had no more success as defense dominated the court for five minutes. Finally, the alums sunk one final shot and celebrated in triumph.
“The evening was fun and exciting. It brought back a lot of good memories,” laughed Gilbert White, “I had a great time.” |
