December 10, 2009 8th graders visit Montclair Art Museum
From Keva Berutti, art teacher
The eighth grade students had a wonderful opportunity to travel as a group to the Montclair Art Museum to view the Cezanne and American Modernism exhibit on December 10th, 2009. It was a beautiful day and a very worthwhile experience for all involved.
The exhibit described the important role of Paul Cezanne on influencing American Artists. The students were therefore exposed to a large group of American artists as well as Cezanne. All the eighth grade students prepared for the exhibit by reading a short biography about the artist and spending a class period in the computer lab researching some paintings and areas of interest that they would be viewing at the museum. The students familiarized themselves with still life paintings, figure paintings, and landscapes by Cezanne and were well able to distinguish between his work and the work of the artists he influenced. They recognized themes they had researched and were comfortable asking questions and discussing what they saw.
The students who are currently in art and those who will have art later in the school year will create a still life painting based on his famous themes of apples and oranges. The trip would not have been possible without the generosity of Frank and Margo Walters and the Montclair Art Museum so a big Link “shout out” to our wonderful supporters.
