U.S. Presidential Inauguration Assembly
January 20, 2009

U.S. Presidential Inauguration, Barack H. Obama
January 20, 2009
Student Assembly

To mark the occasion of the inauguration of the 44th President of the United States of America, Barack Obama, students at Link staged a very special assembly with guidance from Vice Principal Keisha Cleveland-Baptiste. The program lifted up the historic moment - the election of the first African American as president - in light of the founding fathers' promise of justice, liberty and equality for all. Here are some images from the assembly:

After a rousing rendition of Lift Every Voice and Sing, also known as the Black National Anthem, 8th grader Anthony Johnson recited a poem by Langston Hughes titled I Too Sing America.

Keying off the Declaration of Independence and the promise of equality for all, students quoted from speeches of various public figures such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Barack Obama and Abraham Lincoln - speeches which highlight their visions and hopes for the future. Left to right: Taylor Holliman, Anthony Johnson, Quinn Saffold, Justin Eke and Lamar Williams.

Ms. Antoinette Perry, Link's music teacher and a professional jazz and blues singer, sang
God Bless This Child, a song written by Billie Holiday and Arthur Herzog, Jr.

The Link African Dancers performed an energetic number under the guidance of Brother Jerome Hunter, on the drum.

Rayana Yarborough (left) and Imani Powell (right) read original letters they composed for President Obama describing their feelings about his election and expressed what they hope he will accomplish while in office. Read their letters here.

The program ended with another poem by Langston Hughes, Dreams, read by 7th grader Ted Compere. Interspersed in the program were inspirational audio-visual presentations prepared by Pryce Mandel, Director of Technology.

After the program, students and staff viewed the swearing in ceremony and the inaugural speech
by President Obama.
