May 14, 2009 Link girls meet with college softball tourney finalists at the Yogi Berra Museum Twenty young girls from Link participated in a program connecting female collegiate athletes with female middle school students hosted by The Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center in Montclair, NJ. The goal of the program, a community service project for the finalist teams in the Division III Softball Championship at Montclair State University, was to inspire the younger girls to consider high school and college sports. The event featured one-or-one conversations about school and life, goals and aspirations; a group sharing of team cheers, school songs and more; and a tour of the museum by Director Dave Kaplan. During the tour, Mr. Kaplan recounted the history of baseball, and drew the girls’ attention to various defining moments. He pointed out the display of the women’s baseball teams that were popular during World War II era when the men were off in battle. He also spoke about Jackie Robinson, the first African-American to be signed to a major league baseball team rather than to the Negro Baseball League, ending sixty years of segregation in baseball.
