Linkers Compete in Annual Sally Ride Toy Challenge Competition

A team of Link 8th graders -- Shaheerah Allen, Joyceline Appiah, Amber Rogers and Sadiera Crawford -- will compete as finalists in the Sally Ride Science Toy Challenge at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in Alexandria, Virginia on May 17th. As their entry to the Toy Challenge, the team, known as The Elite 4, worked together to create a new game called Cartoon Troubadour. The game, designed for families to spend more time together, involves using popular cartoon characters to carry out a mission. The first to accomplish the mission wins the game.

The students are participants in the local Sally Ride Science club at Link, led by science teacher and coach Rosana Chanco and sponsored by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation in Hanover, NJ. Dr. Sally Ride, America's first woman in space, founded Sally Ride Science, a national program to encourage girls to explore the fields of science, engineering and design in creative and fun ways with the ultimate goal of inspiring more women to enter those fields as careers.

For the past two years, Link has had a Sally Ride Science Chapter, with sixteen 8th grade girls participating each year. This year three of the four teams' projects made it to the second round of judging and now, one team, The Elite 4, moves on to the East Coast/National event where they will compete with 125 other teams. At the event the team will not only present a prototype of their design, but also make a presentation to a panel of judges.

At Link we are very proud that The Elite 4 will be going to "nationals." They have worked hard and deserve our support and encouragement as they move into the final competition with their project. We wish them well in Alexandria!

We invite the members of our extended Link community -- families, trustees, alumni and friends -- to pass on good wishes and encouragement to The Elite 4 on our message board.
